Playing strength versus rating

This came to my mind the other day: I am going to avoid showing rating points in my games from now on. (in the game-blog at chess dot com)
Why? The common chess-player thinks that rating is everything, that players play according to their ratings and that their games are worth that much attention accordingly. That may be the case with players who participate in tournaments on a regular basis, but with those for whom playing more than 9 games during three consecutive months is a rare and extraordinary event, it isn't. In their case, their rating will at some time in the future match the play, but until then there is nothing surprising about it when they perform (well) above the number denoting the actual rating.

I would rated myself a candidate master (2200~2300), while thanks to a busted tournament of Dec-2006 in the country, where I got an incredibly low initial rating, and the invariably low number of tournament games topped up with health reasons, the four-digit number is still nearing 2100 from below.
I already can defeat a few FMs out of the 2300s but still have a long way to go, and even putting aside the conditions mentioned above and in the previous blog entry, I am still far from playing "real chess", having a lot to learn even to be comparable to an IM, nevertheless I love the game and try to make use of the miriads of books I have--that is what I do while others are out playing in tournaments, modifying their ratings.

I started to take the game more seriously in the year of the busted tournament, by beginning to use my books and other instuctional stuff, and have been studying this game ever since without a coach or outside help. I get to a tournament every three months on average, which is not much, to say the least.
That is why I have to say, for me, at least, strength is more important than rating. (If I thought otherwise, I would always be bound to lose to higher-rated players.) I think there are quite a few chess-lovers out who should think about their chess with a similar approach in order to develop it to their potential.

Playing After Sleepless Nights Far Away From Home

I participated in three individual tournaments from August 20 to September 27, playing 19 games.
Due to the excessive lack of sleep and other unusual conditions, I lost or drew several games to weaker opposition. And most of the losses were after being the first to achieve a "+-" (winning) position.
Let's see what happened.
During the August tournament in the country, I managed to sleep only a total of 4 hours throughout the 3 nights. ..
Then at the middle of September, I was very sick and at the verge of fainting during the first two morning games, after an hour of travelling in a car in the mornings and being compelled to start the games immediately, without time for recreation.
Finally at the end of the same month, sharing a room again with another player, a total of 2 hours of sleep throughout the 2 whole nights had its impacts on my play...
All these circumstances resulted in losing 9 rating points rather than gaining 40-50, which could have been a realistic expectation versus those opponents.

The same happened in a February tournament, also with the nights spent far away from home, with a final result of +0 -4 =0, also against not very good opposition, having to play after 0 (zero/null) hour of sleep.
And in July, the only decent result (27+ rating points, beating a 2300-FM, drawing an IM, etc) had very much to do to the fact that that event, the sole one in this "series", was held in a place that was easily reachable from home in the mornings--I was sleeping at home...

Sarret Cup, the 3rd, in Tetétlen (summary+games)

I came in 1st place (+5 -0 =2) on the 3rd day of this 7-round open tournament for players below 2200 FIDE rating.
All my games are analyzed with some engine (i.e. Rybka 3 Dynamic-w32, mostly) and downloadable from the link above. (The entry title is a link.)

The first and the third game (against Lenke and Csomós, respectively) were the most horrible of all, the latter because of 0 (zero) minute's sleep during the previous night... That day I played 3 games and scored 2.5 points, which certainly could not have been achieved against stronger opposition.

Well, this had been my first 1st place in an individual tournament with more than 50 participants, as far as I can remember. I was happy, but... I could have scored even better if I had slept more than 2 (two) and 0 (none) hour during the nights before the second days's 3 and the third day's 2 games, respectively... (the usual chronical sleeplessness)

Karneval Cup [team round robin] in Debrecen (summary+games)

I came in 3rd place (+3 -2 =1) in this 6-round team open tournament. It really was team, but the players were also ranked according to the individual performance.
All my games are analyzed with some engine (i.e. Rybka 2.3.2-w32, mostly) and downloadable from the link above. (The entry title above is a link.)
In my game against FM Gál... Well, I played White and was standing += throughout the game until move 48, when I blundered in the drawn endgame. Apart from the outcome, that is my favorite game, when I made a lot of good moves and the play was very exciting. (O.K. the latter also can be said about my game against Horváth, which was a draw.) Áts blundered horribly after a dubious opening, while Kelemen completely misjudged the position and went for a pawn before my final blow. They are not so bad, but this was not their tournament.
As for the last round's defeat, which was the shortest one of the entire tournament with its 16 moves, again I didn't sleep much.

Puspokladany Open, the 2nd, in Püspökladány (summary+games)

Because of having the worse Buchhholz, I came in only 2nd (+7 -1 =1) after the 9th round of this 4-day open tournament for sub-2200 players.

As for the dropped 1.5 points, there were sleepless nights again. There was a time during the tournament when I had to ask somebody for a place where I could sleep for an hour or two before the next round... Usually it takes quite an effort for me to fall asleep at usual hours, especially when I must sleep. (Sorry for my bad English, I am beginning to feel I have to practice even more.)
Unfortunately, day one of this event became a nightmare for me (at least, as for the quality of my game after a certain point), but this time thanks to my opponent. He kept speaking to me during the game, even when I was to move, we even had a quarell about it
I could name only a few games in which I didn't mistakes that could have proven faithful against stronger opponents: the ones against Hegedűs (round 3), Solymosi (r5), and Ress (r7). But when I didn't, my opponents did.

It's incredible, but true: today in a 25-board simultaneous display I managed to win against GM Zoltán Almási, a 2674 player, who is currently 47th-ranked in the world and 3rd in Hungary.
O.K., he was far from his best in this simultan game, but he is a top GM nevertheless.
Who does not know him...?

Apart from two games from 12 years ago, today was the 1st time that I had played an OTB game against a grandmaster, and now I am very very very very very HAPPPY. (I was so happy this evening that I could have screamed.)

I heard that I was the only one who managed to win, even though at least three players were 2100+ and I could name a "2200+"-player, too. (the GM's statisctics after all games: +20 =4 -1)

He was the very type of opponent I should have beaten no matter what--only having survived the opening part...
Having gone through the game again, I am not very fond of the whole idea of exchanging pawns on d5 early and, of course, that 8.Bf4?? was something resembling my early days of playing in OTB tournaments, when once I got checkmated as early as in 7--as White... :)
I don't think anything like this could ever happen on occassions when I am calm and have had a good night's sleep before the game. But this time, I could have said _days_ before the game, without being sure of the identity of the oppponent, that I am only sure that I will be unable to pay attention to chess... I simply couldn't get myself at all to practice. :-(
However, at times like this, when I am not in good mood and the opponent is weaker, I should at least try using different openings, which keep the position closed until when my king has castled and moved to safety. Sadly, I had neglected to consider that.

Nyirseg Open, the 26th, in Nyiregyhaza (summary+games)

Nyírség Open, with its 9 rounds and 75 international participants, took place from June 30 to July 8 in Nyíregyháza, where I played every game against a rated opponent and achieved a TPR of 2236 and came in 25th. (Too bad that this could not already have been the tournament in which I became a FIDE-rated player.) I got defeated only twice, while offering draws two times in "+-" positions against 2200+ opponents. So, it could even have been better.

Tomorrow a county team ch. match takes place in Nyíregyháza, I will probably have the White pieces this time. Maybe I will lose for the first time, maybe not. For me it is always risky to play against players who are weaker according to rating.
From tomorrow on, hopefully on a daily basis, I will post a variety of chess lessons which I will have just been through, including puzzles of tactics, and ideas, plans, positions to play for.

My opponent had scored 7 points out of 7 games (both county and national team championships) this season, so I was surprised to see his setup during the game. I was constantly expecting him to make some splendid move that would suddenly alter the course of events, but all at once with a lonely knight against four pawns on the board he stretched out the right hand...so I think I somehow (somewhere) missed it.

Looking for a book on Pirc Defense

Its title is "Pirc Alert!: A Complete Defense Against 1. E4" and is written by Lev Alburt and published in 2001. Its size is about 220 pages.
Does anyone have it?
For I did find and downloaded it in PDF format (14.2 MB), but the quality was so low that I couldn't read it, therefore I need a better version (scanned at a better resolution level).
Anyway, I would be glad to hear of anything related to Pirc Defense. I, also, have a lot of chess-related stuff... :)

For me, this game was the turning point of the tournament. It was during this game that I realized I was losing to a weaker opponent.
The opponent, a 73 year-old man (born in 1933), whose chess career was now in decline, always gave the heaviest nods when his position just started to get worse. (Until my dubious f7-f5 move I stood better, yet he had nodded heavily at a lot of moves of mine.) At first I thought that in that way he tried to make a diversion, but later I discovered that he used his head for nodding when he felt he stood better. (OMG!)
The way he treated the opening part was extremely unambitious and it seemed to me that he was not aware that what he was doing was not luring me into some trap but simply ruining his own position. Unfortunately, I failed to prove it to him and I don't think he is aware of it now.
When I committed that stupid f7-f5, which I never would after a good night's sleep, I felt extremely disappointed, and became disorganized. I had a strong feeling that I had missed something, and in spite of the fact that the position was still close to equal, I started to play like I were drunk. I made one mistake after another, for in my head the game had already been over.

- e5, that I thought was invulnerable, so I went on to move
- f5, which proved to be premature and later an obstacle to my bishop,
- f4, which I could have used but instead my opponent used it later for blockading my pieces,

Firstly, my own observations (without having the game analyzed by computer)

11.Bd3
was a weak move. 11.Be2 was preferable. Then the advance e6-e5, which I excpected Black to make, would not have meant so much threat.
I saw the mistake already at the time of making it. (On move 11.)

22.Nxe3
was another one, that I made without giving any thought to it. I was expecting my opponent to take on h3 with the Bishop, which he did, but in my imagination his queen stood on g5, that is, the move I made seemed to be the only way for me to prevent the checkmate on g2... Incredible.
I did not lose because of that move, but it is still incredible. I was extremely hungry (which means empty stomach), which was my fault but it does not have much to do with chess. (But affects its quality nevertheless.)
22.gxh3 was preferable, after which there would have been more pieces left on the board, still with my material advantage and a safer king.

30.Bg2 was terrifying. On making it, I already felt it was no good.
I had seen that Qe4 could restrict Black's rook more, yet I decided, in the last second, to make a mistake.

34.Bxb7... Well, it just lost a piece, the bishop. I must admit, I did not expect that. (Qb4) Why? I was disappointed at not going Qb1-e4 a few moves earlier, so I forgot to glance around. I was busy gaining a pawn back...

Help needed with Chessbase and some thoughts on wins and loses

So, the day finally has come--tomorrow the tournament commences. Six years have passed by without participating in any single individual over-the-board chess event for Elo-rating...
I must admit that my opening preparation has been far from decent. My memory lets me down far too often and I don't really know when I will be able to memorize even forcing lines.. :-(
For me, opening preparation is nevertheless important in that I need to have a feeling of confidence about the types of positions. Before tournaments, I usually study several games played in this or that opening, while I am still not so experienced to know where I need to stop and say, this (or that) is a starting point for which games to be collected (and studied).
I need help in making good use of Chessbase. (I have version 9.) Unfortunately, there is nobody around to explain how a professional (or half-professional :)) creates their repertoire using this application. (So, for the time being, I only have a single database with 2 games--one for White and the other for Black (as myself)--, and there I write all the lines I play along with the games I randomly choose from larger databases. Too bad, this way both games (with dozens of variations) become harder and harder to look through, especially because _all the opening lines with the particular color are mixed up_ in them. Is there more appropriate way of creating a repertoire?
BTW, what does "add to repertoire" mean? (In CB9.)

OK, that's for now, it's too late already, 4:29 AM actually, so I gotta go to bed. I am going to take the train in the evening, for I don't like waking up early in the morning. (Actually, in the mornings at all. :))

Finally, a little bit of wisdom I don't want to fail to share with the world: :) In this tournament, there will inevitably be games that I lose because of some blunder. (During games, I recognize whether I am a better player or not than my opponent, but still I am capable of losing strategically/tactically won positions against even weaker players due to some kind of distraction, when I fail to finish off the opposition.) But this time I feel prepared for that. I am not going to be too happy with a winning position and vice versa, I am not going to be too sad when I lose it.
Thus far, I have won five games in a row (all of the games already played in the team championship), but I do know that I am still able to find the losing move even in a won position. (Yes, I am!)
The goal of this emotional preparation is to reduce expectations. The less expectations you have, the less emotions get involved in the games. With less emotions you will have more energy to concentrate on playing--not the opponent but the board. And when it doesn't happen to work, nothing's going to happen, the end of the world hasn't come yet. Next time it will be better, nobody cares what the opponent thinks of your knowledge of chess.

How to take advantage of a dead bishop?

The position below arose after White's 32nd move, Kxd2. (White just took the rook.)

This is exactly the setup I had been playing for in the game yesterday, for I thought it was won because of the opponent's dead h7B.
What do you think -- is it actually won by White? I have had this played out several times by Fritz 9, both with blitz and shootout, and all of the times White won due to the spatial advantage, but I am not sure if the engines played the best possible lines.
What should White's (who has the living bishop) plan be in positions like this?

Another Trip to Budapest

This time I spent five days in Budapest and, of course, I made it to ongoing chess events, including a Péntek 3-kor rapid, the Round #1 of the First Saturday tournament series, and some venues of national Team Championship matches.
Arriving at a TCh venue, I was a little disappointed not to see Judit Polgár show up, whose first appearance on her new team is still to come.
I decided to enroll in a Péntek 3 rapid tournament sometime, and maybe a First Saturday as well.

During the previous years I hardly participated in tournaments, which may account for this new excitement. :)

This position occurred in the club match today, where Black's pieces were led by a team-mate, Peter (first name).
Black is two pawns up and has an initiative against White's vulnerable king (honestly, if I had been White, I would have resigned here since it is a clear -+), yet after 1..g5 2.fxg6 Rxg6+ 3.Kh3 Rxg2 4.Qxg2 Qg6, where White avoided changing queens, he somehow succeeded in not only losing the initiative but also messing up the position by letting White's queen penetrate on g7 and soon trap the d6 rook (after a check the king moves to b6, then the queen to e7), at which point Black was forced to resign. :-(
According to engine Rybka, 2..hxg6 (text line) is a better choice. (minus five-something)
And if I had been Black I would have deviated from text line on move #3 by choosing f6-f5. (I did not much like the d6 rook playing the role of a pawn.)

This collapse was a typical example of how much the level of alertness can drop in positions where every move seems to be winning. (I will soon show a game of mine where the same happened to me.)

Today I won again. It was my 9th (nineth) game in a row with Black... (Surprising as it may sound, since 2004 I have been playing in team tournaments only, and since 2000 I have not played a single game for Elo-rating in any individual tournament.)

So, I have won all three of Black games in this season. I must admit that my opponents did not show much resistance, yet I am glad.

Today I won again in the county club championship.
It was a blunder at the end that resulted in a 4-move checkmate (remember, my MGPG were on!), nevertheless I was satisfied, because I had been sick for days and did not sleep a single minute the night before the game.

Kibitzing in Budapest

Around the middle of the month I spent a few days in Budapest, and during that period I took the opportunity and went to kibitz a club team match between my former club, Tabáni Spartacus of Budapest, and the defending champion, Csuti of Zalaegerszeg. White is a Russian of 2558 Elo, Black is O.K. :) (OK, Black actually is a Hungarian guy, but I don't know him in person. The source of this material is a Hungarian chess-related mailing list, and the subject of the post was something like "David against Goliat", playing a bit with Black's real name.)

This one was taken on Sunday morning, at a team match between Derecske (my team) and Nagyrábé. (Before this season I chose to play for teams at locations far from my hometown and, beside Lokomotív of Nyíregyháza, which play in Group Barcza of Division 2 of the national championship, this team play in the local championship of my county.) You can spot me at the far end of the row of tables, with my head ascending the highest /*as usual :)*/). You cannot really recognize my Magic Green Playing-Glasses //also referred to as MGPG// ;-), but I am going to show you a picture of it, too.

As you can infer from the photo, this is not the wealthiest team nor does it employ the best players of the countryside (came in last in the previous season -- when I wasn't on it /*so probably that's why ;-)*/), nevertheless these matches, too, provide good opportunities for playing over the board.

About floaters in the eye

This entry is not related to the topic of the blog, chess. But it is so important for me, that I cannot avoid mentioning it.

The thing is, I have been suffering from a severe eye problem since July 2004. It is called vitreous floaters, which are spots and ... floating in the vitreous gel of the eye.

I used to be a programmer--till I could keep ignoring the floaters, but now they almost completely prevent me from working in front of computer screens, and makes daytime very hard to cope with at other times. (For someone who ... It is something like taking waterglasses, placing forever-living bugs in them and sticking the whole thing to your head for goods, without the least hope of getting rid of them. You ara still able to see it anything but you never know when outside objects get ... by objects in your glass. Can you still ... ? Don't forget--your bugs will be there for ever. How do you feel? )
I already had floaters before 2004, but not of the size and darkness that I have been compelled to live with since then.
It is not an exaggeration, in opp... as many say. There are different kinds and sizes of floaters, and I unfortunately have a clue of that difference...

I am in my early-thirties. By my opthamologist, the cause is said to be myopia (i.e. nearsightedness).
Not any improvement in my eyesight has occurred during these 3.5 years. The situation has only worsened.

My goal with this blog-entry is to get in touch with people in similar situations, who are severe floater-cases, from around the world. (via MSN chats, e-mails, ..., anything)
I am considering only laser-treatment, which is not available in my country, but not vitrectomy.

First Entry -- Introduction

This blog is meant to be exclusively a chess-related blog. I am creating this blog in order to give some idea of myself to chess enthusiasts I encounter at various places on the Internet.
I will place here mostly information about what is going on in my personal chess life, i.e. what tournaments I am playing in, what positions are occurring in my games and so on, but I am planning to include interesting materials from other sources as well.
I also intend to use this blog as a complement to my chess-related website (in Hungarian only), which is under constant construction and is mainly a collection of analyzed games of mine. (A further intention is to improve the pages in many aspects, including multi-language capabilities.)
Of course, I am far from being a top-level player, yet I strive for perfection and love this game very much -- that is why I also deal with it in the form of a chess blog.

With no special place given, I think this is where I should list my favorite players of all time. Here they come: Anatoly Karpov, the Polgár sisters, and I conventionally root for all Hungarians (including Péter Lékó and Zoltán Almási -- to mention only today's greatest players).

While reading the entries, if you come across grammatical mistakes and your English is perfect, please correct me in a comment.
